General Invertebrate Anatomy Glossary

Exoskeleton

Hard outer covering that provides structure and protection.

Antennae

Sensory organs for smell, vibration, and navigation.

Mandibles

Jaw structure used for chewing or defense.

Hemolymph

Invertebrate "blood," circulating nutrients and oxygen.

Metamorphosis

Developmental transformation (complete or incomplete).

Proboscis

Tube-like feeding structure in some insects.

Tarsus

Final segments of the legs, often ending in claws or pads.

Core Arachnid Terms

Arachnid

Eight-legged invertebrates including spiders, scorpions, harvestmen, and more.

Cephalothorax

Fused head + thorax section where legs attach.

Abdomen

Rear body segment containing organs and spinnerets.

Spinnerets

Silk-producing organs at the tip of the abdomen.

Pedipalps

Act as sensory organs and assist in manipulating food; in males, used for reproducing. 

Chelicerae

Mouthparts that hold fangs in spiders.

Exuviae

The shed exoskeleton after molting.

Instar

Growth stage between molts.

Reproduction & Development Terms

Clutch

Group of eggs laid at one time.

Nymph

Immature stage of insects with incomplete metamorphosis (e.g., mantids).

Larva

Immature stage of insects with complete metamorphosis. (e.g., beetles)

Pupa

Transitional stage before adulthood.

Sling or Spiderling

Refers to a newly hatched arachnid (e.g., jumping spiders). 

Brood Care

Parental care of eggs or young (rare but present in some species).

Parthenogenesis

Reproduction without fertilization.

Behavior & Ecology Terms

Nocturnal

Active at night.

Diurnal

Active during the day.

Crepuscular

Active during twilight (dawn and dusk). 

Burrowing

Digging behavior for shelter or molting.

Detritivore

Species that feed on decaying organic matter (e.g., isopods, millipedes).

Predatory

Hunts and consumes live prey.

Molting

Shedding the exoskeleton to grow.

Husbandry & Care Terms

Humidity Gradient

Range of moisture levels within an enclosure.

Bioactive

Enclosure with live plants, cleanup crew, and natural cycles. 

Substrate

Material lining the bottom of the habitat or enclosure.

Arboreal

Species that live above ground.

Terrestrial

Ground-dwelling species.

Fossorial

Burrowers that need deep substrate and primarily live underground.

Enrichment

Items or structures that encourage natural behaviors.
