Derby's Flower Beetle

 Derby’s Flower Beetles grow through a gentle, year‑long journey: from tiny eggs tucked into soft flake soil, to hungry grubs, to carefully crafted cocoon balls, and finally into bright, jewel‑toned adults. Their larval stage lasts 8–12 months, followed by a short but magical adult life of 3–6 months, including a natural dormant period. Each stage has its own rhythm and needs, making them a wonderful species for keepers who enjoy watching quiet transformations unfold.

 Grubs thrive in simple, nutrient‑rich homes filled with flake soil or a mix of 80% oak leaves and 20% rotten wood. Keep humidity around 50–60% and temperatures between 70–77°F. L1–L2 larvae do well in 4 oz deli cups, while L3 larvae can move into 16 oz cups or a larger communal container. As they near pupation, they form delicate cocoon balls from frass—avoid disturbing these, and consider adding a bit of clay to help them build stronger, safer chambers. 

 Adult Derby’s Flower Beetles prefer a clean, airy enclosure with 40–50% humidity and temperatures of 68–80°F. They don’t require packed substrate—simply fill the container with flake soil and offer bark or décor for climbing. Their bright wings and gentle nature make them delightful display beetles, though they may take flight without warning. If handling, utilize a large butterfly net, or something similar to keep them in an enclosed area. 

 Derby’s Flower Beetles enjoy mild, stable warmth. Adults thrive between 68–80°F, while larvae prefer 70–77°F. No special lighting is required—ambient room light is enough—but avoid direct sunlight or heat sources that may dry the enclosure. 

 Humidity plays a gentle but important role in keeping Derby’s Flower Beetles comfortable. Adults prefer 40–50%, while larvae need a slightly higher 50–60%. For flake soil, the moisture is perfect when it forms a ball in your hand without dripping; if water seeps out, it’s too wet. Maintaining this balance helps prevent mold, keeps larvae feeding well, and supports healthy cocoon formation.

  Larvae feed exclusively on flake soil or an oak‑leaf/rotten‑wood blend, eating steadily as they grow. Adults enjoy beetle jelly or soft fruits—avoid citrus, which can irritate them. Fresh food encourages activity and helps adults maintain energy for exploring, flying, and breeding. Replace fruit before it spoils to keep the enclosure clean and inviting.
